Do I need to have my pool or spa inspected?
Yes, new legislation introduced by the Victorian Government requires all pool and spa owners to have their pool or spa inspected by a registered inspector every four years. You must submit a Certificate of Compliance to your local council to show that your pool or spa has been inspected.
How do I book a pool or spa inspection?
First, you need to make sure that your pool or spa is registered with your local council. Visit your local council website to register your pool or spa.

When does my pool or spa need to be inspected by?
The deadline for inspection depends on when your pool or spa was constructed:
- For a swimming pool or spa constructed on or before 30 June 1994, a Certificate of Compliance must be lodged by 1 June 2021.
- For a swimming pool or spa constructed between 1 July 1994 and 1 May 2012, a Certificate of Compliance must be lodged by 1 June 2022.
- For a swimming pool or spa constructed between 1 May 2012 and 31 May 2020, a Certificate of Compliance must be lodged by 1 June 2023.
My pool fence is new. Does it still need to be inspected?
Yes, under the new legislation all pools and spas must be inspected. You will need to register with your local council and they can advise the date by which you must lodge a compliance certificate.
Does my pool or spa require a safety barrier?
All types of swimming pool and spa require a safety barrier, which must be inspected every four years. This includes:
- In-ground swimming pools
- Above-ground swimming pools (including permanent and temporary swimming pools)
- Indoor swimming pools
- Spas
- Swim spas
- Bathing and wading pools
- Jacuzzis and hot tubs
The only exception to this is portable pools that come in one piece and do not require assembly. For example, an inflatable pool that is deflated after use does not require a safety barrier.
What happens if I don’t get my pool or spa inspected?
If you fail lodge a Certificate of Compliance by the deadline, you could face fines of up to $1,817.40 from your local council.
How long does an inspection take?
The inspection generally takes less than an hour.
Do I need to be home while the inspection is carried out?
No, you do not need to be home while we conduct the inspection. The only exception to this is if the wall of your house forms part of the pool safety barrier. In this case, we will need access to any doors and windows leading to the pool area.

What does the inspector look for?
The inspector will look for any faults with your pool safety barrier that may present a danger to children. This may be issues with the pool fence, the pool gate, or climbable objects near the pool area. How long does it take to get my Certificate of Compliance?
If your pool is compliant, you’ll receive your certificate within a day or two.
What if my safety barrier doesn’t pass the inspection?
If your pool doesn’t comply, we’ll provide you with a detailed report letting you know exactly what needs to be done to bring your pool up to code. You’ll then have 60 days to complete the work and have the pool re-inspected. If the barrier is still not compliant, we are required to notify your local council.
I recently purchased my property. How do I know if my pool has been registered/inspected?
You should contact your local council to ask whether your pool has been registered or inspected. They will have records showing which pools have been registered and when they were last inspected.
